House Church

“Salute the brethren which are in Laodicea, and Nymphas, and the church which is in his house.” Colossians 4:15 (KJV)

The early Church met in the homes of the people.  Nympha was the owner of this home where Christians were meeting on the Lord’s Day, and such other times that they met to learn the Word of God, pray, and worship.

Every Christian family should have worship, learning and prayer in their home; and each family member should exemplify the life of Jesus Christ; not only at home, but in the community they live, the place they work, shop, play and recreate.

The fact that people met in Nympha’s house is evidence that the early Church saw cause for us as Christians to gather with other Christians.  Why would that be so?

Let us consider some causes:

  1.  Study of the Word of God for increased knowledge and wisdom;
  2.  Prayer; there is power in numbers of people gathering for prayer;
  3.  Worship of the Lord Jesus Christ along with the above prepares us to go into a lost dark world to share the Gospel of Christ with others;
  4.  We are given the opportunity to give of ourselves, and our resources to get the gospel out into the world.

This is not an exhausted list, but a beginning.  One of the great reasons for gathering on the Lord’s Day is because we have a verse which tells us “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together…” (Hebrews 10:25).

God bless the house Church today; and all the Churches where the word of God is preached and the cross of Jesus Christ is proclaimed.
