“And Bezaleel made the ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half was the length of it, and a cubit and a half the breadth of it, and a cubit and a half the height of it: and he overlaid it with pure gold within and without, and made a crown of gold to it round about. And he cast for it four rings of gold, to be set by the four corners of it; even two rings upon the one side of it, and two rings upon the other side of it. And he made staves of shittim wood, and overlaid them with gold. And he put the staves into the rings by the sides of the ark, to bear the ark.
And he made the mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half was the length thereof, and one cubit and a half the breadth thereof. And he made two cherubims of gold, beaten out of one piece made he them, on the two ends of the mercy seat; one cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof. And the cherubims spread out their wings on high, and covered with their wings over the mercy seat, with their faces one to another; even to the mercy seatward were the faces of the cherubims.” Exodus 37:1-9 (KJB)
The plans had been drawn out by GOD in the eternity past. His plan for the redemption of Adam kind. It is an amazing salvation, a glorious redemption, and wondrous propitiation for the souls of men. It is seen in the tabernacle of the wilderness. The way of salvation begins with sacrifice; it continues to the washing – these were daily events – but pictures of the one day that would come when the Savior would Himself be the propitiate for our sins.
Within the holiest – often called the Holy of Holies there was the ark of the covenant; which represents the Presence of GOD. Only one way to get to it, and that was through the veil. It was carried by the priest when the people moved; that is the purpose for the rings in each side, and the poles.
Some may think that studies of these things are not relevant. O if we think that we miss the whole point of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. These things are pictures, types, representation of the Greater One that was to come. Can we not see the tedious, day in and day out ritual that was done so that they might be saved? In the Old Testament and in the Law their salvation was still all by the grace of God; but Oh, how tedious it was to be reminded day by day of the need for a blood sacrifice.
Getting to the presence of God was difficult. The veil has been taken away “torn from the top to the bottom” by the hand of God Himself. When we go there; into His presence; we see Jesus Christ the Son of God who is God the Son.
