Thankful For The Eternal
We are sometimes grateful for the blessings of this life that God gives us by His grace, and sometimes we are not grateful for them. We ought always be thankful, and not growl and complain about our ‘lot’ in life. God is worthy of thanksgiving and praise.
When we are thankful, most of the time it is because of a loved one’s recovery from a health problem, a financial blessing came along unexpectedly, we finally got the improvements on the house done, or something on those lines. How often do we offer thanks to God for the eternal things? It is a good thing to be thankful for those temporal – perishing – things, but it is far better to be thankful for those things which will never perish.
Here are five things concerning eternity for which we should be thankful: 1) God as Creator; 2) God being holy; 3) God’s inerrant and infallible Word; 4) The cross of Jesus; 5) The assurance of our salvation. Please understand this is not an exhausted list. There are many other eternal things for which to be thankful.
I. GOD AS CREATOR.
A. “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth” Genesis 1:1 (KJV).
B. “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” Psalm 19:1 (KJV).
C. “The earth is the LORD’S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein” Psalm 24:1 (KJV).
II. GOD IS HOLY.
A. “…and the vail shall divide unto you between the holy place and the most holy” Ex. 26:33 (KJV).
B. “For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy” Lev. 11:45 (KJV).
C. “And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent” Matthew 27:51 (KJV).
III. GOD’S INERRANT AND INFALLIBLE WORD.
A. “For ever, O LORD, Thy Word is settled in heaven” Psalm 119:89.
B. “ For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” Heb. 4:12.
C. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? by taking heed thereto according to thy word”; “ Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” Psalm 119:9, 11.
D. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works” 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
E. “ Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever” Heb. 13:8.
IV. THE CROSS OF JESUS.
A. “And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God;) that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance” Deut. 21:22-23 (KJV).
B. “ Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree” Gal. 3:13 (KJV).
C. “ I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me” Gal. 2:20.
V. THE ASSURANCE OF SALVATION.
A. “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God” John 3:14-21 (KJV).
B. “Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?” 1 John 5:5 (KJV).
C. “He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” 1 John 5:10-13 (KJV).
I. NO ONE CAN BE TRULY, AND SINCERE.Y THANKFUL UNTIL JESUS CHRIST IS LORD OF THEIR LIFE.
II. HIS CREATION AWES US. HIS HOLINESS FRIGHTENS US. HIS WORD CORRECTS, TEACHES, AND INSTRUCTS US. HIS CROSS INFLICTS US. HIS FAITHFUL NESS IN SALVATION ASSURES US.
III.. ”IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS…” IS STILL A VERY IMPORTANT ADMONITION FOR GOD’S PEOPLE TO HEED.
IV. REMEMBER THANKFULNESS FOR THE ETERNAL THINGS. THEY WILL LAST FOREVER.
