We have all been in a conversation with one or more with friends, family, people where we work, etc.; and stood there hearing sounds, but rather than listening we feign listening; while we are planning what we are going to say, when we get a chance. You know what I am talking about now. Be honest.
Jesus was rebuking the scribes and Pharisees. He had just called them “Hypocrites” (Luke 11:44), and that He did not approve of their offices of “power” as they were using them.
Hear what the Evangelist Luke writes of their listening:
“And as He said these things unto them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to urge Him vehemently, and to provoke Him to speak of many things: laying wait for Him, and seeking to catch something out of His mouth, that they might accuse Him.” Luke 11:53-54 (KJV)
They were verbally attacking Him, criticizing Him “vehemently” with fierce words. They would not hear a word He said. These were people who had bound the people for years; and now that a Man had come, and proclaimed Himself to be the Son of God and God the Son they were jealous of Him, His teaching, His authority, and following.
The scribes (Lawyers) sought how they might trap Him in His words. They wanted to kill Him. Could Jesus speak anything worthy of death? Not according to true holiness, justness, and righteousness. According to the laws of men only; and their distorted and twisted views of God’s law.
Listen to the words of Jesus. In them are the words of life. To reject them, and refuse them is death. Believe Jesus today.
