“For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God; and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come.” 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (KJV)
For the month of November we will be looking at the Letter of Paul to the Church at Thessolonica. A new congregation who had questions about their loved ones who had passed away – “Would they miss the resurrection? Would they be in the catching away?” The apostle Paul answers those questions in this and the following Letter.
These were a people who were Gentiles who had formerly worshiped idols, had turned from them to the living and true God, and were anxiously awaiting the return of the Jesus Christ the Son of God who was raised from the dead.
Please note the phrase “…Which delivered us from the wrath to come”. This must be dealing with a future “wrath” due to the fact that they had been delivered from the judgment of sin through the cross of Jesus, His burial and His resurrection; and their faith in Him. The wrath to come would be a period of time on earth; which is yet to come even in 2016; is coming still, but will be a time of great catastrophe unlike anything the world has ever seen.
Christian. Do not lose heart. You have been delivered from it unto Jesus Christ.
