For today’s Bible reading I read 1 Kings 19 – 20…
“Yet I have left Me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.” 1 Kings 19:18 (KJB)
The words of God had just been spoken to Elijah following his running from the threatening words of the wicked queen Jezebel. She had threatened his life because of his slaying of the 450 prophets of Baal. They were her men. Now she hated Elijah, probably always did because he was the prophet of the Living God, and he pulled no punches when it came to exposing the evil of this king and queen.
Elijah had a great victory on Mount Carmel with the challenge of the fire and offerings. “Let the God who answers by fire be God”, and so the challenge was won by YaHWeH (Jehovah). Then a measly, mealy mouthed woman threatens his life and he runs. One sad thing I noted is then he prayed to die (19:4). My thought on that is, “If you are praying to die why not just face the source of the threat to your life?” Elijah is a better man than myself, and we all have our weaknesses, that is for sure.
With the victory of Carmel under his belt Elijah runs from the victory. GOD cares for his man. The prophet feels that he is the only prophet in Israel (19:4 and 14).
God then gives Elijah three assignments. The first is to anoint Hazael king over Syria; the second, anoint Jehu to be king over Israel; and the third is to anoint Elisha as the prophet to take Elijah’s place. Elijah’s time of ministry is nearly over now, but GOD is not finished with him yet.
O the grace, the love, the mercy of God. It is shown in the life and ministry of Elijah. It can be seen throughout the pages of God’s written word. It is especially shown to us, to the word through the cross of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, God the living Son, who did not run from victory, but fulfilled the victory by dying for the sins of the world, being buried, and rising again showing the world that sin, death, hell, and the grave had been defeated.
Turn to Jesus Christ today. Run to victory that is yours through Him.
