Reading Chapters 7 – 8 of 1 Chronicles for today…

“And the sons of Ulam were mighty men of valour, archers, and had many sons, and sons’ sons, an hundred and fifty. All these are of the sons of Benjamin.” 1 Chronicles 8:40  (KJB)

The question could be asked, “Are genealogies necessary for an individual to know?”  My thoughts are it does not hurt.  In some cases it can be a very informing and exciting thing to find things about your ancestors you did not know before.  In other ways it could be discouraging.

This genealogy of the people of Israel is quite in depth, and laborious for a Gentile Christian to study or to read.  Yet, within it there are tidbits of wealth for us to find, and to learn from.

In chapters seven and eight there is mention of “Men of valor”.  The word “valor” is used 37 times in the Biblical history books of Joshua through Esther. In our reading for this morning the word is used four times in chapter seven, and once in chapter eight; the verse for the day above.

This is a genealogy of the tribe of Benjamin, the tribe from which King Saul was born into.  He is remembered by the people getting ready to return to the land because of Jonathan, more than Saul.  If you will remember Jonathan and David made a covenant with one another.

About these archers, the men of valor, there was 150 of them; probably around the time of Hezekiah the king of Judah.  Being “Men of valor” they were men who could hit the mark.  They were good at what they did.  They were men who when faced with fearful situations went right to the task at hand anyway.

It is important to know where you came from.  It is even more important to know where you are going.  You can know all there is to know about your ancestors, your entire family and history thereof; but if you do not know the direction of your life’s destination, then you have nothing.

I can tell you your life’s destination.  If you are without Christ Jesus, the One who died for you and me, then your destiny is Hell.  If you have been born again through the cross of Jesus; His death, burial, and resurrection, then your destiny is Heaven, where Jesus is.

We missed the mark (Romans 3:23) when it comes to God and eternity.  Jesus is the perfect Archer, and He hit the mark for us through His faith in God His Father, and perfect obedience to His will.  Follow Jesus; He is the progenitor of our faith.
