A young ruler had come to Jesus asking Him how one might inherit eternal life. He had started the question with the politeness a young person ought to have, “Good Master”. Jesus’s response was,
“Why callest thou Me good? None is good, save One, that is, God.” Luke 18:19
Jesus, however, was not denying anything of Himself, but getting the young man’s attention. None is good, but God.
In the world of 2018 we use the word “Good” referring to people, men and women, much too often. The Scriptures are quite clear on the matter of our “Goodness”. Paul has written by the Spirit of God, and quoting the Old Testament, “There is none good…” (Psalm 14:3; Romans 3:10-12). We know from Scripture that we of Adam’s kind are born sinners, and cannot please God.
In the Psalms it is written…
“A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion. Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance. He shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the LORD. His heart is established, he shall not be afraid, until he see his desire upon his enemies. He hath dispersed, he hath given to the poor; his righteousness endureth for ever; his horn shall be exalted with honour.
The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.” Psalm 112:5-10 (KJB)
The good, the righteous man, the righteous woman, is identified by the characteristics named in this Psalm.
The “good man” shows favor to the less fortunate. He will live his life with care, guarding his life, and actions so as not to bring shame to God, himself, his family, etc. The good man is not moved by whims, fancies, or fads – he will stand on truth.
The good, the righteous individual will not fear when threatened for standing for God and right and good, and will see the judgment of the unrighteous, the evil.
This righteousness is the righteousness that only comes from God. It is a gift. The power and authority of the good; the righteous; will be exalted in honor. The wicked are never pleased by righteousness. They desire to see the fall of the righteous; while the righteous desire to see the overthrow of evil, and hearts and minds of people changed to the good and the right.
There is only One righteous man that lived on the earth. His name is Jesus. His name is Immanuel. He is Counselor. He is Mighty God. He is Everlasting Father. He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). He is the One who loved us so much He went to the cross and died, paying our sin debt, was buried, carrying our sins and shame away leaving them there; then, rising from the dead and the grave forever to be exalted at His Father’s right hand.
When we trust Him, which is a gift, we are declared “Righteous” by the Father Himself; because of the righteousness of His Son Jesus.
The righteous man, woman, individual is identified by their dependence on the cross of Jesus. Believe Him
