Nobody wants to be a victim of anything. The word for the day is “Survivor”. But there is one thing that is difficult to survive. We all have a little device that can be used for good or for evil, and all of us fall prey to it often. Hear what the writer of Proverbs says,
“He that hideth hatred with lying lips, and he that uttereth a slander, is a fool. In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise. The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth. The lips of the righteous feed many: but fools die for want of wisdom.” Proverbs 10:18-21 (KJB)
The tongue is that device. Far too many times we use it before we use our minds; and that is bad enough. Far too often, though, we use it after much thought to assassinate the characters of other individuals with whom we disagree. Which is really a bad, and sad commentary on people who wear the name of Jesus.
The tongue is used like a weapon. Anger and hatred are spread through the vitriolic speech of many in disagreement with one another. May God help us all.
- Hiding hatred with lying words;
- In too much talk not enough listening is no lack of sin;
- Refraining the tongue at the right times is wise;
- The tongue used to build up is like silver;
- The lips of righteousness is a source of sustenance and strength to many.
Let us give our hearts and lives to the crucified, buried, and resurrected Savior Jesus Christ, who willingly gave His life to deliver us from all our sin, including our voracious appetite to devour our neighbor with words of hate. Let us all become survivors of our own tongue.
