“And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a Man with him until the breaking of the day. And when He saw that He prevailed not against him, He touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as He wrestled with him.
And He said, ‘Let Me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me.’ And He said unto him, ‘What is thy name? And he said, ‘Jacob.’ And He said, ‘Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.’
And Jacob asked him, and said, ‘Tell me, I pray Thee, Thy name.’ And He said, ‘Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after My name?’ And He blessed him there.
And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved. And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because He touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.” Genesis 32:24-32  (KJB)

The Man mentioned can be none other than the physical manifestation of the preincarnated Lord Jesus Christ – a Christophony.

It is the LORD who brought the fight to Jacob.  Jacob was still spiritually weak, and he was about to face an opponent he conceived as being stronger than himself; that was brother Esau.  Jacob was fearful for his own life because he had swindled him out of the birthright as the elder son (See Genesis 27).

Have you ever had a fight with GOD?  A trouble or sorrow, a trial, a test you are going through; something you fear, and are about to come face to face with it?  Jacob’s face to face was going to be Esau.  GOD came to Jacob for this to equip Jacob for facing his brother without fear.  When you have been blessed by God through your encounter with Him… Who is there to fear?

By the way, when you have wrestled with God it will be noticed; by you, and by others too.

  1. Bro Tim, just this past Wednesday night, this passage was the lesson the different classed for our young people were taught. I don’t actually teach Wednesday nights, but I sometimes give the short devotional and invitation we have for the young people. We talked really briefly about this as an appearance of Jesus. It was interesting to see the kids mull that over. It was even interesting to see some of the adults thinking about it. I see this also as a picture of salvation, in that Jacob was given a new name, becoming a new creation much as we do upon our own salvation. I am enjoying the increased commentary you have been writing on the verses you post.

      1. I know. That is one of the most amazing things about the Scriptures. I have read through from Genesis through the Revelation at least 40 times, and I am constantly learning something new, and receiving continual renewing and growth of faith. The Lord Jesus Christ and His word are absolutely glorious.
