“Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Beware of Him, and obey His voice, provoke Him not; for He will not pardon your transgressions: for My name is in Him. But if thou shalt indeed obey His voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. For Mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and He shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.” Exodus 23:20-25 (KJB)
The Angel of God’s presence. Hear His voice. More than an angel. He is not created, but rather He created all things, “And without Him was not anything made that was made” (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16).
He would keep the children of Israel from their enemy.
The commandment was “You shall not bow down [worship] their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works, but you shall overthrow them, and break down their images…”
The children of Israel were to worship only one God. His Presence was with them guiding them through the wilderness, keeping them. The apostle Paul described this Angel as the Rock which followed them…
“And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.” 1 Corinthians 10:4
The One who will keep you through every trial, every wilderness experience, every storm, every temptation, every snare and temptation is Jesus Christ.
He died on the cross for you, forgiving all our sin; He was buried carrying all our sin, condemnation, and guilt to the grave, leaving them there when He came out of that grave alive.
