“And Moses said unto the LORD, ‘See, Thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and Thou hast not let me know whom Thou wilt send with me. Yet Thou hast said, I know thee by name, and Thou hast also found grace in My sight. Now therefore, I pray Thee, if I have found grace in Thy sight, shew me now Thy way, that I may know Thee, that I may find grace in Thy sight: and consider that this nation is Thy people.’ And he said, ‘My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.’ And he said unto Him, ‘If Thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence. For wherein shall it be known here that I and Thy people have found grace in Thy sight? Is it not in that Thou goest with us? So shall we be separated, I and Thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.’ And the LORD said unto Moses, ‘I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in My sight, and I know thee by name.” Exodus 33:12-17  (KJB)

This event has come about because of the calf worship which had been born of a complaining, murmuring people.   Aaron, brother of Moses, and aid, and servant to GOD had molded the horrendous form of worship himself.  Due to this transgression of God’s law God has told them they will no longer have His presence (verses 33:1-3), and an angel will lead them to “the land flowing with milk and honey”.

Moses is once again interceding for the people.

O, how sad it is when the people of GOD turn their backs on Him to worship a substance formed into an image a created being.  How weak. How miserable. How horrendous and empty. How vile and evil.

GOD hears Moses’ prayer; and once again shows them mercy.

For the leaders of God’s people we can learn how we can intercede for our people who are weighed down by the cares of this world, and life itself.  For the people we can learn to trust in the LORD even when He may, to us, at the present be absent; and we can know that we have a spiritual leader, a shepherd who cares for us.

Jesus is the Great Shepherd and He shows us the way of life.  He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6); and no  one can come to God the Father except through Him.
