He Riseth From Supper
John 13:4-5
1. The time is the evening before the trial and death of our Lord;
2. Jesus and the disciples have eaten the Passover meal; as well as instituting the Lord’s Supper;
3. Following the supper Jesus rose up, laid aside His outer garments, and began to serve the disciples;
4. This is a time when GOD stooped to serve humanity.
I. IN THIS ACTION OF JESUS DEMONSTRATES A PICTURE OF HIS DEPARTURE FROM HEAVEN (v. 4; Philippians 2:7).
II. HE LEFT HEAVEN’S SUPPER AND CAME DOWN.
III. HE LAID ASIDE THE DEITY AND POSITION OF HEAVEN AND CAME DOWN.
IV. HE TOOK UPON HIMSELF THE FORM OF A SERVANT, AND GIRDED HIMSELF.
Application –
i. By the demonstration of Jesus we too can demonstrate the love of Christ to a lost world.
ii. Just as Jesus lovingly departed from His heavenly throne; we too can stoop to serve one another and others when we are given opportunity, and at every opportunity.
iii. Knowing who we are in Christ Jesus gives us freedom without fear of losing what is ours through Christ Jesus.
iv. We must gird ourselves with the towel and basin of service to show a world in darkness the light of Jesus Christ.
