Christians are citizens of two worlds. We are citizens of the nations in which we live, or not, because I know some are working; or visiting; in a foreign nation; and that could serve well with the point I want to make today.
When citizens of one nation are in a foreign nation they must abide by the laws of that nation they are in. It is true of Christians too.
As a Christian my citizenship was first on planet earth, and the United States of America. I was born here to parents who were born here as well. After my new birth in Jesus Christ I became a citizen of heaven (Philippians 3:20) – the abiding place of God – who also now lives in me too. How are Christians to live in a nation which is not their eternal home? The prophet Jeremiah gives us the answer in a letter he sent to the captives of Judah and Israel…
“Now these are the words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the remainder of the elders who were carried away captive—to the priests, the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had carried away captive from Jerusalem to Babylon. (This happened after Jeconiah the king, the queen mother, the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem.) The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon, to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying,
Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon:
Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished. And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace. For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you, nor listen to your dreams which you cause to be dreamed. For they prophesy falsely to you in My name; I have not sent them, says the LORD.” Jeremiah 29:1-9 (NKJV)
Basically he calls for the people who are captives in the foreign land to live a normal life, obeying the laws of the land, building homes, working, and praying for the city in which they live. Giving their children in marriage was a part of it too, and have children.
Jeremiah warns also… “Do not let your prophets and your diviners who are in your midst deceive you…” They were most likely telling the people, “We will be leaving shortly”, “Jeremiah has said we will be here seventy years, but it will only be a couple”.
Here in the U. S. of A. we are living in a land with laws we do not like or approve of as Christians. So far we have the right as citizens to call for and direct change, but beware things are changing. How are we to live? Just as Jeremiah says above.
Trust the Lord Jesus Christ the Son of God, God the Son, who died on the cross for your sins and mine, was buried, and bodily arose from the grave, and is eternally alive making intercession for us every moment of every day.
