Reading for January 23, 2018:  Exodus 11 – 13

And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud, to lead them the way; and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light; to go by day and night: He took not away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people. Exodus 13:21-22 (KJV)

As we read this last verse of chapter 13 we see the LORD leading the children out of Egypt by way of the wilderness.  As they journey God will be with them.  He shows Himself present with them by day and by night.  By day He reveals Himself as a pillar of cloud.  By night He reveals Himself as a pillar of fire or light.

He is basically revealing Himself to them as their forward and their rearward.  Which means He leads them and is protecting them from behind as well.

This relates to the born again believer as the Lord Jesus Christ being with us by day and by night in the person of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is Christ in us, the hope of glory.  He is, in fact, our light, our guide, and a fire which burns the dross of sin and shame away.

We can know that He is with us, and within us, by the fruit we bear.  If there is no fruit of the Spirit, it is because there is no Holy Spirit there.  Read Romans 8:9.

Because He is our Pillar He can be trusted by day and by night.  We begin trusting Him by believing what He says.  If you cannot believe what He says you have no life, neither will you have any life, now or hereafter.  Believe the Lord Jesus Christ who is the Son of God, and God the Son.
