Reading today from 1 Samuel 5 – 7…
“And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, ‘If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve Him only: and He will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines.’
Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only.” 1 Samuel 7:3-4 (KJB)
When a people group or one person get away from God that group or person needs to return to the Lord. The people of Israel had drifted away from God and worshiped false gods of the people of the land that they had won.
These were snares and thorns to their lives; from loving God the LORD, and being blessed by Him. There is no mixing of worshiping God and false deities It is really hypocrisy and adultery.
When Samuel came with the message of repentance; that is turning from their false worship to only worship the LORD God; they destroyed the idols they had been worshiping. They realized that God was GOD the Almighty, Creator, and Giver of life. They repented and put away the idols of their convenience, comfort, and pleasure which had become their deities.
Have we Christians elevated convenience, comfort, and pleasure to the realm of deity? If so we must put them away, and put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Galatians 3:27). Comfort, convenience, and pleasures can be blessings of God, but when we begin to expect them, or demand them, we are worshipers of the blessing.
Let us who are in Christ Jesus thank God for the blessings, serve the LORD. Let us always remember to worship the Blesser, and not the blessing.
