We folks of Adam’s race seem to hold things of value.  We value our home, our car, our health, our security, our family, our job, and our smart phone as of a dear value – it appears that way a lot of times.  I have, in joking manner said, “If evolution is true then one of these days we will have our babies being born with a smart phone in their hands.”  Notice I said “Joking manner”.

What do we hold as valuable?  What can we live with?  What can we live without?  I know for a fact that I can live without a smart phone.  It is a convenience; it is even a luxury item; but it is not a necessity for life.  I am saying these things to help us see what is really a necessity for life and living.

Job says that the word of God is a necessity for him.  Hear what he says…

“Neither have I gone back from the commandment of His lips; I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.”  Job 23:12 (KJB)

He says, “I have esteemed the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.”  I eat food sometimes like it is an automatic thing.  There are people in the world who wake each morning, and go to bed each evening wondering where their next meal is going to come from.  Food is valuable for life and living.  No one can live very long without sustenance of food.

Job values the words of the Lords mouth more than his necessary food.  I believe one could say that he has been, and is being tested on that at this very point in his life.

Job, most likely, did not have the access to the word of God that you and I have; and most likely even the Ten Commandments had not been given to Moses yet; but what he had he cherished as of great value.  Is the word of God of any value to you?

You show its value by the amount of time you spend in it, reading it, it reading you, devouring it, it devouring you – showing you your sins, encouraging you, comforting, strengthening you, and building up God in your heart and mind.  You will be like Job and find it of greater value than your food needs for the day.

O will you draw near to God today through the cross of Jesus God’s holy, righteous, blessed, and only begotten Son.  Call on the name of Jesus.  That is the beginning place of beginning to cherish the words of God.
