Jeremiah did not enjoy preaching the message which God gave him to preach.  He loved the people, the priests (they were members of his own family), the princes, and the kings.  He loved the temple and what it represented.  Most of all Jeremiah loved God and His commandments.

When Hananiah the prophet preached that God would return the vessels from the temple which Nebuchadnezzar had taken already and within “two full years” Jeremiah said, “Amen, the LORD do so. May the LORD perform the words you have spoken” and then Jeremiah went his way.

God had a message for Hananiah, and sent Jeremiah with the message, and he spoke it in the presence of the other priests and prophets…

“Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron. For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.

Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie. Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.

So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.” Jeremiah 28:12-17 (KJB)

The LORD will perform His word.  He will not honor the words of those who preach and teach rebellion.  The false prophets, like Hananiah, were teaching contrary to the message God was giving Jeremiah.  The false preachers were teaching security, survival, and without God.

As we look at this we must remember that Judah was in a evil state of rebellion against God, His word, and the reality of the truth of the temple.  They were worshiping false gods, violating the law of God through injustice, robbing the poor and twisting God’s words to do so.  God had sent prophets to warn the priests and the kings; but to no avail.

You can clearly see that it was Jeremiah’s message that stood the test.  He was faithful; and he was pained by the message he delivered.  The message in part to Hananiah was, “This year you shall die, because you have taught rebellion against the LORD”.  A false message that seemingly gives hope is no hope at all.  It is the teaching of rebellion against God.

The only message of hope that is for the people of 2018 and beyond is the Christ Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and He rose again.  Jesus said, “I will come again, and receive you unto Myself…” (John 14:3).
