Devour the Word of GOD

“And when I looked, behold, an hand was sent unto me; and, lo, a roll of a book was therein; and He spread it before me; and it was written within and without: and there was written therein lamentations, and mourning, and woe. Moreover He said unto me, Son of man, eat that thou findest; eat this roll, and go speak unto the house of Israel. So I opened my mouth, and He caused me to eat that roll. And He said unto me, Son of man, cause thy belly to eat, and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee. Then did I eat it; and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness.” Ezekiel 2:9 – 3:3  (KJB)

You will notice that I combined the end of chapter 2, and the beginning of chapter 3.  I believe the reason is quite obvious.  They go together. The only reasons for the chapter and verse divisions is for our benefit in finding where we were.  They are not divided in the originals.

We eat for the purpose of keeping our strength and health.  Many eat three meals per day; some even more; including “snacks”.

God’s word for Ezekiel was to take the roll [scroll]; we would call it a book today; maybe even an iPad.  To actually eat such a thing would be nigh onto impossible.  Why is God commanding Ezekiel to eat the scroll? To give him the nourishment for the spirit, to give the message of God’s word to His people.  To have the strength and spiritual health to live as God would have him to. In the Revelation the apostle John was also told to eat a little book (Revelation 10:9).

Christian we need to daily devour the word of God.  Not passively, arrogantly, or quickly; but with great care, and passion for God and His word.  We should desire the word of God more in our lives than we do bacon and eggs or whatever we may crave in the way of physical food.

It begins by knowing Jesus Christ, being known by Him, and loving Him because He first loved us.
