Welcome to the Daily Bible Reading comments for January 1, 2010; and Happy New Year.
We have read Genesis 1 – 3 for the days reading.
The first chapter deals with the first six days of Creation; God’s creating work in His Creation. God [Elohim] took nothing and made something from that nothing. Some may ask and wonder, “Where did God come from?” and the only answer we have for that is that He is Self- sufficient, thus needed no one to make Him.
The name God or “Elohim” is a plural name giving us the first glimpse of the holy Trinity, and we can see all present in the work of creating. The Father spoke and “said”, the word spoken (John 1:1, 14) went forth, and the Spirit “…moved over the face of the waters” (1:2).
Only an All-Powerful, All-Present, All-Knowing and never changing GOD could have created the whole universe in six days. The Bible is about Him, His Son, and His glory. All the things we will read will point us to Him.
In chapter two we find a little more detailed information of the creation of the man and woman [Adam and Eve], that they and the whole human race are a special creation, because it is said, God “…breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (2:7).
In chapter two is also included words of blessing and warning. There was fruit on every tree of the garden. Two trees are mentioned; the Tree of life, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil “in the midst of the garden” (2:9). They are forbidden to eat from the “tree of knowledge of good and evil” lest they die (v. 17).
Chapter three shows us the evil heart of a created being, and his deception of, and disobedience of God’s people created in His own image. The lie of the serpent is still being promoted by many religions. They won’t come right out and say it but they will tell you and me that we can be like god or gods. You can take control of your own destiny.
The truth of the matter is we are all doomed and damned to fiery hell, except for the grace of God, and His sending His Son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. There is no hope, no salvation apart from God’s finished work on the cross of Christ Jesus. Call on the name of Jesus for salvation, and you will be saved.
Reading for January 02, 2010 is Genesis 4 – 5.
