You are a Christian; have you ever felt like God does not speak to you? I think I may know why; and if you are willing to hear continue reading this post. I think for some it may be enlightening; and for others old news. I want us first to consider this passage from the prophet Jeremiah…
When Jeremiah entered the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the LORD?”
And Jeremiah said, “There is.” Then he said, “You shall be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon!” Jeremiah 37:16-17 (NKJV)
First of all in these verses the king of Judah was Zedekiah who was not a righteous king, and he was really a sort of puppet king to Nebuchadnezzar the Babylonian king. He listened to the feel good guys who was always preaching false messages of hope, and never judgment coming. He too felt as though God was not speaking or he would not have called for Jeremiah to come to his house, and have a private message with the prophet.
His word to the prophet was, “Is there any word from the LORD?” For the prophet I am sure he thought “This is a loaded question”, and was probably a bit troubled to answer, but Jeremiah answered with fire and conviction…”There is”.
The word of the LORD is not always what we would like it to be; but the Lord does speak to us.
Now, copies of Scripture was not readily available to people in Jeremiah’s day. Mostly they would have Scripture read to them when in temple services, and sacrifices to God. Scripture is God’s way of communicating with His children. If you do not hear the written word, you will not hear when He speaks to you in any other way. Jesus said it best…
“Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house, for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’ Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ” Luke 16:27-31
Why do we feel sometimes as though God is not speaking? It could be we are not reading the Scriptures and studying them. Are we praying for hearing and understanding? I find it sad when I hear a professing Christian say something like… “God does not speak to me anymore” or “I never hear God speak to me”; and my first thought is are you reading the Bible and listening? The Bible is God’s means of communication with those who know and love Him through His Son Jesus.
Do you want to hear God speak to you? First you must know His Son Jesus, who died on the cross for your sins, was buried, and He rose again, and forever lives. Call on His name and He will hear you, and save you.
