And Jethro said, Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh, who hath delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly He was above them. Exodus 18:10-11  (KJV)

Moses’ father in law was admiring the work God had done through Moses.  Moses is recognized as a humble and meek man.  Humility and meekness are not weakness, but strength or power under control.

In Exodus 12:12 we read,

“For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.” Ex. 12:12

The Egyptians had put their faith in the Pharaoh, and in the other gods of the land, yet they could not overcome the GOD of gods.  I read something a few years back which stated something on this order… “There are as many gods in the world as their are people on this planet”, and I can kind of understand what was said there.

There is, however, only one true God; and He is the God of Scripture, the Bible.  It is in this Bible, no other book that we learn of Him, His Son, His Spirit, His great salvation, His marvelous grace, His unfathomable mercy and the power of God is unlimited.  The people of Egypt, and the king of Egypt learned that lesson the hard way.

They found out that there is no God like Jehovah [YaHWeH].  They learned that their gods may have had hands but could not work.  They had eyes but could not see.  They had feet but they could not walk. They have noses but they could not smell.  They have ears but they could not hear.  False gods are always dependent upon their worshipers to carry them. Read Psalm 115:1-8.

Jethro recognized what GOD had done in Egypt and was offering Him praise.  There is a phrase used many times in the Old Testament which states…

“And you shall know that I am the LORD your God”  Exodus 14:18;  16:6, 11.

That phrase is used at least 63 times in the prophecy of Ezekiel.  God does show Himself strong in the hearts of those who love Him.

Do you recognize the one and only true God who has created all things, and has provided grace, mercy and peace through His only begotten Son Jesus?  Call on the name of Jesus; the name that is above every name.
