Reading for January 26, 2018: Exodus 21 – 23

Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. Exodus 23:20 (KJV)

As we look at the text today we see that the LORD has just given Moses and the people the Ten Commandments.  The Ten Commandments is not given to keep us from anything, but to direct us toward a relationship with God; the one and only GOD who has created all things.  These Commandments show us our need of God, His mercy, and His grace.

Upon receiving these Commandments God gives some further laws for governing the people, judging legal arguments, etc..  Now, GOD says, “Behold, I send an Angel before you…”  Now, there is some debate, disagreements over who this Angel might be.  Some equate him to being Michael the Arc angel, or even some other angel.  I for one, believe this Angel to be the Angel of the LORD who is mentioned other times in Old Testament Scripture, and who would be the pre-incarnate Son of God, or a Christophany.

God sends His Angel to be with the Israelites as journey through the wilderness. Notice what He says of this Angel;  1) He will keep you in the way;  2)  He will take you to the place He has prepared.  Now does that not sound like Jesus Christ to you?  It does to me, for Jesus said,

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send Him unto you.” John 16:7

And Jesus continues…

“Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come.” John 16:13

One other time speaking of taking us to prepared place Jesus said,

“In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you.  I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you  may be also.”  John 14:2-3

For the Christian we do have the promise of the everlasting presence of Christ. The Holy Spirit is Christ in us the hope of glory.  He guides us in our way, and when we take an unauthorized detour He will get us back in the way.  All through our Christian life He is leading us to that place that He is preparing for us.

Know that He is keeping you in His way.
